Tics (Twitching) Tics are repetitive, uncontrolled, purposeless contractions or twitching of a muscle or group of muscles. The muscles in the face (especially around the mouth or eyes), neck and shoulders are most often affected, causing the appearance of constant grimacing, blinking or shrugging of the shoulders. Tics are very common in childhood - as many as one in four children are said to have one at some point while they're young. Boys are three times more likely to be affected than girls. The tic may be present all day but disappears during sleep or when the child is very absorbed in something. |
